Undecided Voters Define Colorado Democratic Senate Primary Despite Near-Universal Name ID for Hickenlooper

Hickenlooper leading Gonzales 38–30 among likely voters

Colorado Community Research polling reveals a highly fluid race with a surprisingly uncommitted electorate ahead of the June 30 primary.

A new statewide survey of likely Democratic primary voters reveals a surprising dynamic: despite John Hickenlooper’s status as a known political quantity, a massive swath of the Colorado electorate remains undecided.

The poll, conducted by Colorado Community Research from May 17 to May 28, 2026, finds Hickenlooper leading Gonzales 38–30 among likely voters (and 41–34 when allocating leaners). However, the most striking takeaway is the sheer volume of voters who have yet to decide on a candidate. Even though a near-universal 94% of Democratic primary voters are familiar with Hickenlooper, he has not yet locked away the race.

Hickenlooper continues to enjoy a 62% favorability rating compared to just 32% unfavorable. However, just 19% are very favorable, whereas 43% are somewhat favorable, which may contribute significantly to the number of undecided voters in the race.

Colorado Community Research conducted a text-to-web survey of 796 likely voters in the 2026 Colorado Democratic primary. The survey was conducted by inviting respondents to complete an online survey from May 22 to May 28, 2026. This survey has a margin of error of +/- 4.0% at the 95 percent confidence interval. The survey data were weighted to represent the expected turnout demographics of the 2026 Colorado Democratic primary election, using historical primary participation data from the Colorado Secretary of State.
